Bell ringers needed for Salvation Army kettles

November 12, 2012, By Marla Blair, Shoppers are going to start hearing a familiar sound as they approach stores and shopping malls. The sound comes with the holidays, starting in mid-November and continuing into the Christmas season. Salvation Army bell ringers are once again raising awareness for the organization’s mission of helping those in need. Volunteers are needed to fill time slots and that’s where a few hours of time can make a difference for your fellow man.

Tony Shuff, director for the Salvation Army in Lincoln, is asking for volunteers to cover one or two hour positions at Krogers, Lincoln IGA and Walmart. Hours are between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

“We need dozens of time slots, since we don’t ask anyone to work more than one or two hours,” Shuff said. “It is something we are known for, and it is something people respond to during the holiday season. The kettle campaign is our biggest fundraiser for the year.”

Everyone has probably read or heard of those instances from around the country where someone has dropped a gold coin or dollars in large denominations into a kettle. That is a welcome contribution, but it is the single dollar bills and coins that add up to more assistance than one might imagine.

The final sum from loose change and extra “ones” going into a collection will help to take someone from homeless to sheltered; hungry to full; abused to safe. The Salvation Army’s kettle campaign will generate funds that stay in Logan County, so Tony Shuff at the Salvation Army Keest Center, Lincoln, can continue helping people in distressed situations change their lives.

Call Tony at 732-7890 to volunteer as a bell ringer. If you are asked to leave a message, please leave your name and a contact number. Individuals are not required to be affiliated with a specific church or organization. Groups are welcome to work together and rotate their hours. Time may be the best gift you can give this holiday season.
